Very Good Year for All New Ford Explorer

The Detroit News - June 30, 2011
Situation
As year half over, Ford already sold more Explorers this year than all of 2010
Consumers buying revised utility vehicle as fast as Ford can build them
Ford took risk turning stalwart SUV into car-based crossover utility vehicle that buyers could embrace for smother ride and better fuel economy
Explorer now 1 of fastest-selling vehicles in Ford lineup, averaging just 11 days on dealer lots and some dealers selling them right off truck
Last year, Ford sold 60,687 Explorers and by last week, sales already had reached about 64K
Buyers spending an average of $37K for higher-end model, which is about $5K more than average price paid for last year's model
Significant Points
Explorer, named Truck of Year at 2011 North American International Auto Show, became top-seller in segment last month
Beating competitors such as Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and Jeep Grand Cherokee — all of which outsold Ford’s SUV in 2010
W/ V-6, Explorer is EPA rated 17/25 mpg in city/highway driving
Optional EcoBoost turbocharged 2.0L gasoline direct-injection 4-cylinder expected to get 18 mpg city and 26 highway
In new era of stronger fuel economy regulations, it was necessary gamble to replace former, lower-mileage SUV w/ new Taurus-based version
Prior vehicle had run its course, said Michael Robinet, VP of global vehicle forecasts for IHS Automotive
