Pregnant driver information

A lot of things change when a woman is pregnant. the center of gravity changes as does her posture and things are definitely different when she drives. >> denise dador is looking at what one carmaker is doing to understand pregnant drivers. but first, the health department has a warning about measles. >> that's right. measles cases are on the rise. there have been 13 cases this year, but seven since april alone. health experts think the increase might be due to foreign travelers infected abroad and come to california. measles is still an ongoing problem in europe and it's spreading through india and the philippines as well. doctors say because measles spreads so quickly, vaccinations are crucial to prevent an outbreak. >> doctors don't give you a lot of detailed medical advice when it comes to driving when you're pregnant. but women do have concerns. experts say every year about 170,000 car crashes involve pregnant women. >> with her first pregnancy, she's driving until the very end. now she's pregnant again and driving around with her one-year-old. safety is always on her mind. >> i would have a concern with the airbags. so i do aim my steering wheel up. >> the engineers at ford are aware of the airbag concerns. they recommend pregnant women sit as far as they can back in their streets but still reach the pedals. >> certain vehicles have pedal adjustments. you're ready to adjust the pedals forward where you can reach them but sitting further back in the seat. >> engineers were wearing empathy suits to understand a pregnant woman's perspective. they used a virtual computer program and a dummie to see where safety improvements can be made. >> there's no law on how to sit in a car and how to use a seat belt properly. >> the correct way, place the lap belt on your abdomen across your shoulder and thigh. make sure the belt crosses your shoulder without cutting into your neck. >> some people think if they wear their seat belt, it's going to harm their baby in the event of a crash. experts say if you wear it properly, there's no clear evidence that safety restraints harm your baby or your uterus. if you want to survive the crash, you have to wear one. >> everyone should wear a seat belt. if you wear it properly and follow the tips we talked about, you'll be safe in the car. >> no one can predict when a woman will begin labor. some doctors recommend driving with another adult during the last month of pregnancy and not to drive or sit more than two hours to prevent blood clots. >> sharon offers more important advice. ...
